Small forward is the Blazers strongest and deepest position but [Gerald] Wallace and [Nicolas] Batum have contract negotiations coming up. How can the Blazers afford to keep both of them? Then again how can they afford not to?

I love the way you put that. I also love both players. From an enjoyment standpoint Wallace is my favorite Blazer on the current squad and it’s not even close. From a titillation and appreciation of potential standpoint Batum tops the list. Together they’re #1 and #2 on Dave’s “Best Blazers to Watch” list.

Tonight, we gained a vivid reminder of how awful some post-lockout games can be. In a game as ugly as you’d expect at the end of a 6 game road trip, the Portland Trail Blazers come up short against the Detroit Pistons, 94-91. The Pistons deserve credit for working hard all night, but this is a game the Gerald-Wallace-less Blazers gave away with lackluster defense.
LaMarcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 25 points and only 4 rebounds, with Nicolas Batum (14 points, 9 rebounds), Craig Smith (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Raymond Felton (20 points, 9 assists) playing key

In a Nutshell
On a night when the Pistons want to play slow and ugly the Blazers oblige them on both accounts with an emphasis on the “ugly”. The Blazers fail to score on the break, don’t score enough inside, allow the Piston guards to run rampant, and absolutely terrorize everybody’s eyeballs from the three-point arc. Despite this they remain in a single-possession game down to the wire but can’t convert the tying shot.

The Toronto Raptors never gave up, but LaMarcus Aldridge placed the Portland Trail Blazers on his back and carried the team to a 10 point victory. In the process, he became the sixth Blazer to reach 30+ points with 20+ rebounds. This won’t be on a highlight reel of Blazer wins, but they’ll take it.
Aldridge finished with 33 points, 23 rebounds and 5 assists, while a hot-shooting Raymond Felton (14 points and 5 assists) and the returning Marcus Camby (10 rebounds) provided support.
